Frequently asked questions

They are financial instruments made up of a common pool of assets from multiple investors, managed by a management entity that invests this capital in different assets — such as bonds, shares or money market instruments — in accordance with a pre-established investment policy.

At Banco Finantia, we distribute investment funds managed by three of the most reputable asset management companies worldwide.

  • Money Market Funds: Portfolios predominantly composed of money market instruments, such as term deposits and investment securities with a maturity generally of less than one year
  • Bond Funds: Portfolios predominantly composed of bonds (debt securities) issued by private or public companies, as well as by States or other governmental entities. These funds are traditionally less exposed to risk;
  • Equity Funds: Portfolios mainly composed of shares in national and international companies. They may offer more attractive returns but are, by nature, associated with a higher level of risk.

The investment funds made available may be subscribed to by investors, whether individuals or companies, taking into account their different investor profiles.

Subscriptions are carried out upon instruction from the client. The request is processed on an “open price” basis, which means that, depending on the fund, the number of units effectively subscribed is only known on one of the following business days, generally on the 1st or 2nd business day after the request.

Fund redemption, whether total or partial, is also carried out upon client request. Depending on the fund, redemption is processed at the value applicable on the date of the request, with that value generally being known on the following business day.

In both cases, subscription or redemption requests may be submitted in person or by email to your account manager.

In the case of Portuguese investment funds, income from units held by individuals resident in Portugal is subject to withholding tax at a flat rate of 28%, with the option for aggregation. Capital gains resulting from the redemption of units are also subject to definitive withholding tax at a rate of 28%.

When income is paid to resident investors that are legal entities, withholding tax applies at a rate of 25%, with the nature of a payment on account. Non-resident investors who obtain income from Portuguese collective investment funds, including capital gains arising from their redemption or liquidation, are exempt from IRS or IRC.

With regard to foreign investment funds, distributed income and capital gains resulting from the onerous disposal or redemption of units, obtained by individuals resident in Portugal, are taxed under IRS at a rate of 28%.

This text constitutes a summary of the applicable tax regime and does not dispense consultation of the legislation in force.

Like other financial instruments, investment funds are subject to different levels of risk, which vary according to their type and portfolio composition. Investment funds do not offer a return guarantee, as it is not possible to anticipate the returns that may be generated in the future.

As a rule, the higher the risk level of a fund, the greater its potential for appreciation. However, this potential is accompanied by a higher risk of loss of the invested capital.

It is also important to consider market risk, resulting from natural price fluctuations in the markets in which each fund invests, as well as, where applicable, foreign exchange risk, associated with the exposure of the fund’s currency to movements in the euro (EUR). Both may result in gains or losses.

Investment funds are regulated financial products and are subject to registration and supervision by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM).

The CMVM is responsible for ensuring that financial intermediaries provide investors with periodic and up-to-date information on funds, as well as all other relevant information.

Investment funds allow you to:

  • Access markets, assets and opportunities that would otherwise not be available to most investors;
  • Diversify investments by spreading them across different securities, markets and currencies, contributing to an overall reduction in risk;
  • Invest over the medium and long term, benefiting, in most cases, from a high level of liquidity;
  • Entrust asset management to specialists dedicated to the individual performance of each fund.
